What is the penalty for overstay?

My F1 visa expired 10 days ago. I graduated 2 years ago. My OPT expired 1 year ago. And I just lost my driver's license. I'm familiar with the 3 year/10 year ban, but what's the grace period for an overstay? Can I still apply to go back to school?

if you had been out of status for less than 5 months, you could have applied for reinstatement. Now, you either have to leave the US or marry a citizen.

The threshold is 180days.

it's different for F-1 people with D/S in their I-94. They usually accumulate out of status time, but not illegal presence, unless officially determined to be out of status by an immigration officer. That's the start of the illegal presence countdown.
