what is the meaning of the word "detention"?

I agree and I do support agriculture control
And I did pay fine, although I had least realized abt carrying small bag
But my question is unanswered.
Will this cause a problem for Naturalization

At interview can i mention that i was take for secondary screening (thats what officer told me, they didn't say like u r detained or anything, but it just regular secondary screening)

Will this be a problem, even If I say i was not sure abt carrying stuff like vegetable.

So question Is this a big hurdle or I should be okay

When you were fined, you were given a ticket right? there are must be some
USC code on it under which you are fined. Check those code out, if it is
not under chapter 18, then most likely it is not crminal offense but only civiil
penalty. I would say if it a civil pebalty forget about this. A civil fine you paid to ICE
is not legally different from teh fine you paid to a public libary for overdue books

I don't think it is any problem. But if you want to find out teh absolute
answer, you can only get such an answer by applying. Only answer
that fimall matters is in a letter you get after your interview

By outrageous, I was referring to the $300 fine. I have seen in many such cases, the CBP agent just confiscate the prohibited items and let passenger go.

:)

To answer the outrageousness of charging the fruits+vegetable guy $300- here is what I have to say
- they charged you for "lying" and not for carrying , say 4 lbs of veggies that cost $3 at most.

Say you get a visit from a cop at your home. He asks you "what time is it" and hands over a watch. You see clearly it is 5 pm - but you tell him 8 AM.
He could write you a citation for "lying"

If this goes into your record, and say you get taken away for processing to understand why you lied, it becomes an issue that will stay in your records for life.

So... when you are applying N400 and get asked to mention all those cases where you were detained AND EVEN THOUGH YOU WERE NOT CHARGED, you have to mention it.
If you dont, they will consider it not good character since you held back info.

Notice that you have not done any harm against the society - you just told the cop wrong time or say there was a misunderstanding with the cop on what he heard. But not telling the incident to INS could cost you your citizenship.

Isnt that weird????

Now my situation -
Like I said most likely I have not being detained - but there is a 2 paragraph story in my record. The issue is will someone take a printout of that story and expect me to tell them FIRST? And if I dont, will they postpone their decision for eternity???

I think now what I should do.
Don't mention it in the form and during the interview, tell them I was pulled over for secondary inspection. If they want more details, I can tell it- if they say ok and move on, I have not hidden anything.
And I am not hiding stuff in the form as I dont consider Sec Insp as detention - plus they DID NOT give me any notice that detention occured.

When the forbidden items are declared, the usual consequence is that they only take away the items (assuming it is not something serious like illegal drugs). But when they are NOT declared and the officer finds them, that's when they tend to impose a fine.
