What happens after the visa expires

Hi All,
If for some reasons you cannot complete the landing process before the visa on the passport expires, can you ask the consulate for some more time or your application is closed?

If the primary completes its landing process and dependents VISA expires, do they (dependents) need to re-submit the application?
