What are the steps in a marriage based green card application?

Hello,

I would like some advice about marriage to an American citizen. My fiance (a U.S. citizen) and I are getting married in February. What are our next steps? I am currently living and working in the United States on a TN-1 visa (Canadian citizen) and my status expires on July 2nd. We wanted to file a petition on my behalf for a conditional green card (I believe it is form I-130) so that there is a possibility of getting the green card before my TN status expires. Does anyone have any advice as to the steps we should take in this process and any timelines for processing conditional marriage-based green cards?

I appreciate any help that you could offer.
Best,
ymathew

Conditional marriage based green cards are looking at around 8 months from filing. I filed in August, but havent heard a thing yet.

If youre worried about not being able to work in-between your TN expiring and getting your greencard, then you could always apply for a 1 year EAD card...you apply for this with your green card application and it usually takes about 60-90 days to receive.

Thank you elcupacabras, for your very helpful and concise message and advice. It is difficult to find this information so concisely almost anywhere, including this site, so I do appreciate your help. Yes, working continuously throughout this process is my goal, so your advice about the EAD is very welcome.
Best and much luck with your application!
