Hi friends

I'm DV 2007 winner, I got my ssn & GC, I'm searching a job in usa. I would like to know what are the benefits we can get. how? from where?

Pls. inform me

There are a lot, like for instance if you are searching for jobs, depending on the area where you are, there are places such as workforces centers that help you out posting resumes, writing cover letters and even using their premises, most of those offices have computers and office gear.

haha. U are just like every other american and immigrant here in the states. U might get very limited assistance from social services but thats it. Not enough to take care of urself anyway. But all u need right now is to take watever job that u can find and start off from there. Good luck buddy
 
I know. I was being sarcastic, since it was the right I had been dreaming about for about 10 years before I got my GC. Somehow some people still ask about some other benefits they can get on top of getting a GC. Some prefer to become a public charge.
 
I'm not sure if it's National or just in Florida where I live but we can claim homestead allowance saving a lot on property tax. In Florida property tax for an average house is around $5000 per year and I believe this reduces by around half with this allowance. Up to now (on our visa) we had to pay the full amount, so thats a clear additional benefit of having a green card.

I don't think it's a case of some people perfering to be a public charge (although I'm sure there are some like that) but the post above was just asking what other benefits are available which is a reasonable question. Personally, other than reduced property taxes, I wouldn't feel comfortable taking any other benefits from the system even if I were entitled, and if that ever happened would probably prefer to return to the UK. Having said that I don't think the USA offer too many benefits to anyone do they?
 
a GC holder is eligible for FAFSA, that's a benefit.

And in-state tuition after being a state resident for a year!

Please keep in mind that health insurance is a must in the US. If something happens to you and you don't have health insurance you will be apying for th e rest of your life.

Hi one question,

How works fafsa? Do they pay you all semester?

I have one year left and uni and was planning to finishing on the US but
dont have much money :(

Just wondering how it works?

College in the US can be very expensive. Witha GC you can apply for student loans, scholarships and maybe federal grants. You are probably looking at $15,000 year in tuition and books (does not include room and board).
Community college might be the best way to start, they tend to be a lot cheaper and after 2 years you can transfer to any university.
 
with one year left at a university, there is no reason to transfer to a community college.

Just get a reentry permit and finish college back in your country. You can go to graduate school in the US, if you want to.
