What about Canadian PR??

I got my Canadian PR back in 2003 - even though I have been to Canada only one and that too for landing purposes only. Now I am about to get my US GC.

What should I do about my Canadian PR? I have a Canadian immigrant stamp on my passport. Now, I am afraid that once I travel outside US - and enter back in US - they might cancel my US GC after seeing my Canadian PR status. What's the right wy to get out of this?

Also are US PRs required any visas to travel to Canada? Can a US PR travel to Canada freely without having to apply for a tourist visa?

-- They won't cancel ur US GC. If asked about it, tell them that You have never lived in Canada and yiu got US GC after getting the PR of Canada.

Both Canada and US has a min. time limit of stay in each country. if u satisfy both u can keep both permits. but u have to show intent to be a permanent resident such as buying a house in each country and living or renting it out. u need to weigh yr pros and cons before giving up either GC. the immigration portal can provide u with information on the form u need to fill and return yr landing papers or GC.

instead of US GC, as a canadian PR you can get a TD visa (TN for canadian and mexico citizens) and live in US, while keeping up the PR status in Canada.

By the way, how is life and job opportunities and economy in canada?

The only way to get a TD is to be married to a Canadian TN holder.

There are a lot more Canadians in the US than Americans in Canada, and there's a reason for that. ;)

I was reading some immigration information and it mentions that as long as one is a PR in Canada or Mexico, you can get TD. But this is news for me that one can get TD only if one is married to a TN.

Under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, it is not possible for you to "cancel" or voluntarily relinquish your permanent resident status.

If you wish to travel to Canada as a visitor and you previously held Permanent Resident status, in order to obtain a visitor visa, you must first apply for a Travel Document to determine if you have indeed retained that status.

If a determination has been made that you have not retained that status, you can either proceed to appeal the decision, or relinquish the right to appeal. If you relinquish the right to appeal, a visitor visa may be issued if all requirements are met.

*** Once you get your US GC you can enter Canada with US GC and at that time you can talk to Canada immigration office that you have not stayed in Canada after landing and you don’t fulfill the residency requirements of Canada PR status and would like to abandon Canada PR status. You can write what the officer says and then officer will write a report and you can have the copy of that report (that was done by somebody at Toronto airport) other person having PR card applied Visitor visa with NYC Canada consulate and he wrote that he did not stay in Canada for last 4 years, he got letter that he is no more PR of Canada and he does not need visa to enter Canada as he had US GC and can enter Canada with US GC.

But I was of understanding that US PRs do not need any visitor visa?? Or do they like you have explained above?

Having both Canadian PR and US PR - is there any chance that I could jeopardize my US PR status? What should I do incase I need to travel to Canada? On the other hand I have only been in Canada for 2 days in the past 3 years after I became Canadian PR. So should I concerned at all? As to retain your Cnadian PR one has to be in Canada for atleast 2 years out of every 5.

What are my options so that I can make sure that no harm is done to my US PR status?

A TD is the dependent status of a TN. If you are not the spouse or child of a TN holder (who needs to be a Canadian or Mexican citizen) you cannot get a TD. Your own citizenship or PR status is irrelevant; the dependent relationship is a must.

I am still very confused.

Here are the facts: I got my Canadian PR Card in June 2004. Also my passport has Canadian PR Stamp on it which I got when I landed in Canada for the first time (was in Canada only for 2 days) in 2004 in order to get my PR status. I have never been to Canada since then. Now, I have gotten my US GC in Jan 2007.

It will be great if I can know the answers to the following questions in lieu of the above facts :

1) While travelling to other countries (other than Canada) outside US - and coming back to US - At POE is there is porbability that my US GC would be cancelled (or, would get reported to USCIS which would later cancel) after the immi. officer sees that I have Canadian PR Stamp on my passport?

2) In 1) can I ask the officer at POE to void/cancel my Canadian PR stamp on my passport?

3) What if I travel to Canada? Would I need a Visa to enter into Canada? At POE into Canada - can I tell them that I have a US GC and wan't to cancel my Canadian GC?

4) To enter into Canada can I simply use my US GC? Also while coming back to US from Canada can I ask officer to cancel my Canadian GC?

It would be almost be three years since my last visit to Canada after getting Canadian GC - should'nt my PR status automatically be cancelled?

All I wan't is to make sure that my US GC does not get revoked in any way. What should a person in my situation do?

Why? You clearly obtained US permanent residency years after Canadian PR.

A US CBP officer has no more authority to cancel a Canadian passport stamp than you or I.

That would seem to be the best way to do it. As a GC holder you should not require a visa to enter Canada.
