I saw a lot of people using GC only today coming in from Mexico. Apparently a passport is not needed if you have a GC. (by land)

i know that the passport is not needed when you enter the States. My question was about entering Mexico by land, if it is possible to do it without passport, only with a GC - by land.
according to this link it is not, but as often in real life things might be different...

If you go by land there is no immigration control entering MExico (at least in the Tijuana side) so no PAssport needed just bring your GC to re enter USA.
If you go by Air you need to have your passport since is a requirement to enter Mexico by Air, you need to clear Mexican immigration and get a stamp and an affixed Visa(like I94type) so carry your passport or RTD along if you are traveling by air.

Mexico doesn't check you when you cross the border, is what he means. There might be random inspections due to the violence in the region, but for that, he can carry his passport and GC, even as an asylee, as Mexico won't care either way. Coming back into the US, the GC should suffice, I think.
