visa on expired passport

My mother has a valid 10yrs. visa on her expired passport. She has obtained a new passport with a slight different name (she's a widow now and she has added that on her name because of other reasons). She's been told she can enter the USA with both passports, the new valid one and the old one with the valid visa.
Has anyone had these experience?

She can staple both booklets and there should not be an issue.

Yup, that is correct, just staple it together with the new one. Thats what I did with my old passport where my visa is stamped. My only concern is, the name on the new passport is now different from the name on the visa?
