violation of F1 status?

I am a grad student finishing my PhD in June and returning to India..I am worried now that I may be out of status...the reason is, my old passport expired Jan28th 2007 and two months before expiry I applied for a new passport, but it was issued only on Feb10th, leaving a gap between the two passports...does this make me out-of-status?

I asked one International advisor in my school who did not think so, but I am not convinced...if anyone can shed some light on this please let me know

Thanks for your helpful reply...the reason I am worried about it is my
job in India is contingent on my PhD, and I've worked too hard for my degree to lose it in this situation...that is why I'm scared...I did talk to another official who said it is not advisable to stay with an expired passport but since I have a new passport it should not affect things if I wanted to come back to the US at a later point of time...this I am not sure I want to, but it is an option I'd like to keep.
