VA non residence on 2010 Tax

I partly lived at VA during 2010. On the VA state website, they mentioned that a part time resident can file Tax as non resident if had stayed at VA for less than 183 days.

I am wondering if this is right thing to do. How will that affect the citizenship process? On the citizenship apply form, they have a box which ask if one has ever filed tax as a non-resident. If I file as non-resident, what will be implications on the question? i.e, can I say I never filed as non-resident.

This is confusing me since VA says they do not distinguish between resident or non-resident aliens. Please suggest me your expert advice.

The mere fact that you filed a non-resident tax return is not a bar to natrualization. You should answer YES, and explain why.

Yet to...

I have yet to file the return. Do you suggest that I should go ahead and file as non resident on VA return?

You were a resident of a state other than VA, correct? So you filed as a resident for that state, and nonresident for VA. There is no problem with that.
