Use Green Card or Passport?

When you travel to a country that has travel agreement with USA is it better to use GC or Passport? For typical example Canada or Mexico.
Both accept american GC as a travel document, but also French (EU) citizens get to travel to those countries visa-free.

In such case, what/which one is better to use?

For going to Canada and Mexico, I figure it would be better to show the green card because that would make them less worried about you getting stuck in their country if you run into financial trouble and can't afford to fly back to Europe. Showing your green card says that your home is in the US, which is much easier to return to than Europe or another continent.

I think Canada actually requires valid passport along with the green card, according to the source http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/helpcentre/answer.asp?q=593&t=16

Was anyone able to enter back and forth with just and only the green card?

I showed only my GC several times entering Canada, and re-entering the US by bus/on foot. Check this out; scroll all the way down to the pictures of the US GC and read what it says above them: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications/pub/bsf5023-eng.html
