US immigration to clamp down on Indian professionals

Washington: Reports quoting American immigration authorities say the US government has decided to reduce the issuance of H-1B visas to professionals from other countries.

The move comes amid US protests at outsourcing jobs to India in the information technology sector.

In another development, Republican Congresswoman Nancy Johnson has asked five leading American companies to reveal how many Indians are employed by them. The insurance companies are: Aetna Inc., CIGNA Corp, The Hartford Financial Services Group, The Phoenix Cos. Inc and Travelers Property Casualty Corp.

There are growing allegations, the H-1B visa programme is being abused.

Meanwhile, Connecticut Republican Congresswoman Nancy Johnson has requested the chief executives of five leading American insurance companies -- Aetna Inc, CIGNA Corp, The Hartford Financial Services Group, The Phoenix Cos Inc and Travelers Property Casualty Corp -- to reveal how many Indian citizens they are employing in information technology.

The request came in the wake of allegations that the companies are abusing the H-1B visa programme.

In her letters to the companies, Johnson also wanted to know if the number of Indian employees in information technology has grown during the past two years and how many information technology workers have been laid off.

Wanting to know more about outsourcing of jobs to India and other nations, Johnson met with constituents last month who were complaining about the loss of jobs for Americans because of the import of foreigners and export of jobs overseas. India was singled out, because its professionals are employable due to their proficiency in English.

"The Congresswoman's interest in this is to see that Connecticut jobs are protected and that the law is followed," Brian S Schubert, Johnson's press secretary was quoted as saying, though there is not the slightest suggestion that the insurance companies are in violation of the law

Thats good some degree, less people filling h1 implies less people filling for their GC implies less load on BCIS implies more chances of they touching 485 :)

Companies can always deny to give such lists of persons regarding the backgrounds of persons , however they have to tell INS how many H1 persons , GC holders , Citizens are working if asked , but nothing like how many indians, chinese and so on . IF they do then welcome to law suits country for making such disclosures.

I agree with ghost rider. Asking for the number of a particular ethnic group employed by a company would amount to racial profiling. If they limit the number of H-1 employees, obviously the Indian community stands to be affected more because it constitutes a huge chunk of H-1 employees (?40%). If we are sure that the congresswoman made such a demand we can report this to the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) and initiate counter measures before it gets to congress as a bill.

Indian citizens cannot play in green card lottery already and soon Indian citizens won't receive H-1B or L1 visas.

Finally it is good for India because we can work in India and build India more powerful. At some point someone has to stop the professionals moving out of India.

GC lottery is meant to get people from other countries who doesnot have much population in USA. india china mexico and some more countries already have there share of population in US thats why they are not elegible for GC lottery.
Stoping the H1, L1 will make compnies like microsoft oracle sun and plenty others to move there office to India or some where else . They are the one who forced the H1 number increase and AC21 regualtions. Then many will require indian H1

I can vouch for at least one thing, I don't have any white
engineers in my group here in san jose. So we don't have
any white engineers in a group of 13 people. Though
certainly many of us would like to see some blondes
in short skirts fixing bugs among us :) .

Justchecking, No you don't. There's one in our group, and I end up doing all her work .. trust me, no matter how good she looks, she is a pain in the ass to atleast one guy.

I was just kidding ...:)

I am at the other side of the spectrum, I am the only non-white engineer in my company ( total employees ~90). There are other asian technicians, though. Also I was the first one to go thru a H1B and GC process in my company. My company is more than 35 years old!
