Dear Sirs,
I have a pending petition for a green card which according to the time table I am supposed to receive on about teh start of 2006. I am now outside the US and I was accepted to gradate school in the UK for a program that starts in October 2005.

My question is:
What happens if I get the green card while attending graduate school in the UK? Coming for an interview in my home country will not be a problem, but will I be forced to MOVE to the USA immediately without completing my graduate degree? I mean can I complete the graduate degree without having my green card lost? What is the maximum period I would be able to stay in the UK without having my green card invalidated? Moreover, what if my green card gets invalidated while I am in graduate school, will I have to do all the process again (and wait 3 years ...) or will I be able to get the green card immediatly?

Best Wishes,
Shlomo.

you will have to use your immigrant visa to enter the States in order to establish your permanent residency.

Then, you will apply for a re-entry permit if you wish to stay outside the US for more than a year but less than two. It takes about a year to get it, but you don't have to wait for it - you can receive it at a consulate abroad. You have to APPLY for it while you are in the States, though.

Other than that come back to the States every six months to a year and have a proof of your US residency ready to show to the immigration office (lease, job, bills, etc).
