Urgent Advice Needed!

Hi,all
I'm an asylee applying for GC i submitted all the required forms and documents!a few days ago i recieved a package from the NY field office containing an INTERVIEW NOTICE and also form (I-864 Affidavit of Support) to fill out,eventhough i'm not applying for an employment-based GC..long story short i had an Infopass appointment today to clear things out and to my shock i was told by the immigration officer that if my income was less than $17,500/year'(which it was last year since i worked part time most of the year,and my income was $16,500 according to W-2 form) then i can't file for myself and i will need a sponser!:confused:

Does anyone ever heard of such a thing?!: i'm really worried and confused as my interview is only 4 days away,and i don't know anyone well enough to sponsor me!:(

any feedback/advice is greatly appreciated!

Are you sure that you are applying as an asylee?

The information the person gave you is dead wrong. Asylees are not subject to this requirement. Congress has made this very clear.

This shows again (I have tried to say this many times before) that it is not useful not talk to an USCIS employee either by calling their 800 number or visiting their office using an INFOPASS appointment. These people have a very limited understanding of the actual contents of immigration laws. Otherwise they would be deciding cases (or in management) not seeing the general public. Note: Immigration Information Officers you see when you have an INFO pass appointment are very different from adjudicators who review and decide your applications.

So again information from immigration information officers is often unrealiable.
 
All you need is take the Court decision or asylum officer decision with you; at the interview, present your documents to the officer and tell him that asylees are not subject to income limitations. If you got asylum in this country and they are asking you to get sponser, there something wrong with their uderstanding of your status; so get some papers to prove your status and they will answer to you...good luck with your interview and let us know what happens after your interview; good luck

My interview is on monday,and i hope you guys are right and the adjudicator knows better than that I.O i spoke to.I'm really nervous about this whole interview thing:( .Do you think it's wise to print out the "Basic Requirements To Apply for Permanant Resident Status As An Asylee" off the USCIS website and present to my interviewer if he/she insists on these income guidelines?!!

Your advice is greatly appreciated!

Just relax and attend the interview!!! There is nothing to worry about.

If it makes you feel better, print out a copy of the law.
 
Ok,guys quick update.

I just got back from my interview at the local office,and everything went great...nothing unusual just routine questions and my interviewer was really nice.I still have to get the certificate of good conduct and submit that within 2 weeks(because my FP were rejected 3 times:eek: ).I didn't have an attorney and thank god i did,as it would've been a waste of money!

I'm just wondering how long does it take to get the GC after the interview?!
i asked the officer and she told me from 6-12 months:( !
 
Count yourself lucky if you receive your GC in under 12 months. Mine took 14 months and I think I got lucky too... there are people here without GCs after more than 3-6 years of applying. What I'm trying to say is... don't worry... that's a good time frame.

Congratulations: that is the experience of the average asylee that went through interview for greencard. What you need is to comply their demands, and send the material they asked for. I don't know about the FBI thing, but normally if everything is normal, you would get your greencard within weeks. Also keep the contact information of the officer; fax #, phone # etc. That is helpful because that is the only way to get the best information of your case.

Also you were brave not to hire a lawyer. Many people do, and the experience is the same with big money wasted. Again you are almost there...sumbit the material and sit tight for the final approval
 
Thanx for the encouraging words,Faysal.i went to police plaza today and did applied for the certificate of good conduct.I should get it in 10-14 days,and i'll submit that as soon as i get it!As for the conact info of my I.O i totally forgot to get it,oh well hopefully i won't need it and my CG will arrive soon.
i'm keeping my fingers crossed!
 
No one can predict how long you need to wait--just be sure to follow up with them after you have waited for a while.
