Unemployed and N-400 application

My husband recently lost his job (2 weeks ago), but has been employed almost the entire duration of his time in the US (on a GC for almost 10 years). He had gone through 2 other periods of unemployment, but they were short term at only 6 weeks each.

Will him being unemployed hinder the process of him becoming a citizen? He may very well have a job before we get an interview date, but I'm worried if he doesn't get one.

We have been married 14 years and have 6 children together.

Boysnberries,

Your husband is in good shape, unemployment is NOT a disqualify for naturalization process. All that he has to indicate in the form, Unemployed as of Nov 2010 to Present. Should his interview arrive while still looking for a job, won't be a problem as long as he meets all other eligibility process. For example, filed taxes and not committed any crimes. He is goo and just relax and serve him some berries.

We had considered applying for a waiver, but figured it might go against us. The fee was sent along with the application, but I see it as money well spent.

Another question: his GC expires 3/2011; what will his status be if he is not naturalized by then? Will he be considered illegal and thus unable to be legally employed?

Thanks for your help!

What is your district office? In most DO, recent history is that USCIS has improved its processing timeline, and he could be a citizen before March. However, should that not materialize, I think you might have to file for a renewal, not strong on that point I am afraid. However, just keep your fingers crossed that his case is done by February 2011.

BigJoe,

Nope, you are complicating issues. She send the form already, meaning that she send the form with the filing fee. Requesting a waiver is just a waste of time and their energy.

I didn't notice her signature line at the bottom.

Yes, fingers crossed!

I'm in the Boston area. I'm assuming there's a DO in Boston where this will all take place.

Thanks for posting. That doesn't look good for us, if I understand the chart correctly. So, it's basically taking 7 months to process N-400 (as of Aug.). The website says they update on or around the 15th of each month, so I'm wondering what happened to September, October, and November's update.

Boysnberries,
Could you share your experience about the FP walk in done in Boston?
I've been reading the posts and although occassionally someone is allowed to have the FP done as a walk in, I have read that many get turned down.
I have my FP scheduled for 12-29-2010, date that I was expecting to be away on vacation. Not a big deal, I could cancel my vacation, but if allowed, I would rather go as a walk in ahead of time. Do not want to postpone my FP.
Thanks.
Daniel

Daniel,

You can go and try to do a walk-in. Do you have travel plans which can be proven, i.e to reserve airline ticket and hotel reservation? If so, then take copies and request the ASC to accommodate you, in most case, USCIS officers are reasonable.

Unfortunately I don't. I was supposed to drive out of Boston on Monday 12-27 to visit some friends for the week, so I do not even have a hotel reservation to show. :<(

If you don't have any travel documentation to back-up your claim, then take your ASC appointment letter in hand, and explain to the Center officials your situation. Due to holidays, it is possible they could accommodate you but be prepare for a disappointment.
