i have been checking the dv lottery now for the past few years and every year i check people born in the uk are never elegible to take part. does anybody have any idea when uk residents will be able to take part in the dv-lottery again?

The short answer is never due to the U.K. already having a multitude of personnel coming into the US on H-1 and then ultimately Green Card. The diversity for the U.K. is no longer there.

not really sure with regard to police officer but at minimal a degree would help since you can then get H-1B if someone can hire you and then have them sponsor you for a green card.

Of course marriage to a USC would also help.
I am from the U.K. and have just spent 8 years (5 of which were for the green card) so it was a long process for me.

you can go to Iraq or Afgan and you can prolly get GC through the service..... If you want to risk your life in exchange of GC.

Or more realistically, get better education and move to the US as skilled worker/professionals.

well i am just a police officer, so what visa would you advise i get?
Sorry to say that, but as police officer I dont see any visa type that would match, expect the diversity lottery.

Most of the other visa are for high skilled workers (like O-Visa).

You just insulted a police officer:eek:
How did I insult him ?

his only chance is getting a higher educaion which qualifies to H1, or get some experience which could be qualified to EB3C(Other worker category). EB3C takes 5+ years as it is limitted to 10000 a year.

This was just a gut reaction to the phrase "get a better education". I felt police officers are pretty well educated.

Its posts like yours that really make me realise how privileged I am that I have obtained a GC through the diversity lottery! Time and time again I have come across posts like yours in which people detail that they have spent literally years trying to get GC status.

As it happens, after much research into visas for the US It began to dawn on me about 7 years ago that If I ever wanted to move to the US I would have to get a degree and go the H route. That was one of the main reasons I went to university when I was 24, that and to get a better paying job. The plan was to get some experience here in my home country and then try and go for H visa. In the mean time I got my NL about a year after I finished college, so it all really worked out for me, as the lady in the consulate said, I really was one of the lucky ones.

The whole US immigration system definitely needs to be over hauled. I still think that if the US introduced some kind of temporary worker visa program that was not specifically dependent on skills/education as such, then people could come and try out living there for a fear years with out going through all the hassle of trying to obtain immigrant status. I suppose this debate will go on long into the future. I wonder if a obama gets into office, what immigration proposals/changes he may be pushing?
