U.S Girlfriend wanting Australian boyfriend to get visa approved

My boyfriend lives in Australia and I live in the U.S. We have been together a year and want him to be able to come here for 6 months to live with me before we take the next stage in our relationship. If we do end up getting married one day, it will be in Australia. He is an Australian citizen but was born in Iran.
Can someone give me advice on the chance of him either being able to get a visitors visa for 6 month or a student visa if they know he has a girlfriend here?
His employer will keep his job there for the 6 months til he gets back and him and his father own property in Australia.
Should he even bring up our relationship when talking to the embassy?

How old is your boyfriend?
Is he young?
The reason I ask is because anyone from a country that participates in the VWP (which includes Australia) will find it extremely difficult to get a tourist visa approved. Im not saying its impossible, but it will be difficult. And if he has his B visa denied, then he will need to declare this on his VWP the next time he enters the US which usually means a trip to secondary inspection.
