Trip Outside of US for more than 6 months - how to produce residence documents

I have recvied my interview letter for N-400.

They are asking the document for the below.

"Evidence showing that you did not abandon your residence or terminate your employment in US
nor abandon your US abode; AND
An original IRS 1722, listing tax information for the past 5 years"

I got GC in 2004 April.

I had been to India in 2005 April and returned back in Nov-2006 on reentry permit.
I have filed taxs for year-2005 and year-2006. No issues with the tax return statements.
(During the above period, I left my job in US)


I gave my freind's address for the bank statements and also in IRS returns during the above period.
(In 2005 tax return my freind's address is there. Since I returned back in Nov 2006, I got my address in 2006 return)

I cannot show any apartment leasing document or house mortagage loan payments.
I have only bank statements.

How can I prove that I have not abandon my residence?

You won't need to, unless you took more long trips after Nov. 2006. That 2005-2006 trip is too old to disqualify you based on continuous residence, because you applied more than 5 years minus 90 days (which is also more than 4 years and 1 day) since the end of that trip. You can safely ignore that letter that asks you for proof of not abandoning residence; it was generated by computer and doesn't apply to you.

Hi Jackolantern,

The trips I made after 2006 all are less than 30 days. I am good about these trips.
I have concerned about my long trip in 2005-2006. Thanks for the clarification.
 
Continuous residence

I had similar problem. Let me share my experience.
I had my GC for about 10 years now. But my trips that were more than 5 years ago was still asked about during the interview. And the IO asked me to provide travel document for those trips. I asked her the reason why it's necessary since they won't affect my 5 years continuous residence. She said that sometimes people take trips that's longer than 6 months without applying for a travel document. And they might get lucky and entered into the U.S. without being questioned and having their PR status removed.
Since it was such a long time ago, I didn't have the original copy of my travel document. So I went in for an infopass session to say that I can not provide an original copy of my travel document, but I did apply and it should be in my A-file. The lady helped pull the record out, printed it, and attached it to my other documents. Now my case status is "On Dec. 23rd 2011, we placed your application in the oath scheduling que." So, hopefully all is alright now.

Despite all the gibberish I typed, my point is, even it's more than 5 years ago they still asked for documents.

That Officer who inquired was either overzealous, under-trained, or BOTH, probably both. I encourage you to write a letter to the Office Director about it so that the issue may be addressed through training in that office. It would be helpful to others applying for naturalization to NOT be unduly delayed as you were.

You could consider it an action in furtherance of fulfilling your "civic duty" as as newly minted (or soon-to-be) USC.
 
Approved for Naturalization

I had my interview today at Norfolk, Virginia office. I had beed approved for the Citizenship.
Verified the GC,Passport, the officer gone through the N-400 application line by line.

She stopped at the place where I menitoned, that I made a trip outside of US which is more than 6 months.
She calculated the days for 4 years and 9 months to confirm whether I have applied after 4 years and 9 months.
She did not ask any thing about the long trip and moved to next items in N-400 application.

She is really a nice officer and she approved my case.
Waiting for Oath date.
