Travelling internationally

Hi,
I am doing a part time masters in CS and may have the opportunity to present an academic paper with my collegues abroad. This is not related to my H1B job. I'm wondering if it would be considered OK to travel abroad for such a purpose? I can't be sure of the immigration officer's response to my "purpose of travel" when I return to the POE, because the travel isn't work related and it isn't vacation.

-----------why not? if you are on H1 the H1 is for US and once you go out it does not matter if you attend confrence

-------------they dont ask at POE why you went out and what for, they ask what you do in US
