Hello, I became eligible to apply for citizenship last july, but financially i wont be ready until Januray, my question is:

Could i travel to Canada for 3 weeks during xmas and new years of 2011 if i plan on sending my application by the end of january2012?

thanks

A 3 week trip right before applying won't cause a problem, assuming it's not part of a larger pattern of frequent/long trips.

i had been told a while back that you could/should not travel at least 3-6 months before applying... cant remember who told me, so i cant really tell if that is true or not, and going to canada is a pattern, but only of short trips, i visit my girlfriend 2-3 per year, and this time i would like to spend xmas there...

Traveling is fine, no problem at all. Maybe you are confusing this with the requirement that you must live in the same jurisdiction of your local USCIS office for at least 3 months prior to your application. Since you are not moving and just traveling, you will be fine.

Each case is unique. Many folks post a skeletal question and leave out the important background information. A person who only makes several short trips annually and has not had NUMEROUS HUGE ABSENCES, need not worry about a vacation or holiday trip.
