ksb007 has summarized very well. Adding to whatever he said, maintaining H1b is always better until your 140 approved. Please also note that when you enter with H1 stamp in your passport, make sure you have your ORIGINAL I-485 receipt notices. They are required for H1B case only and AP doesn't need original receipt notices.
I am planning to go to india this weekend and I was told by my attorney in the last minute that there is a chance that my I485 be denied if my first I140 is denied after replying RFE for I140 (they are doing this week though I am asking them to send reply few weeks back). We requested to link my approved I140 with I485 and the attorney think that it might not have happened and both 485/140 get rejected. So, planning to take an appointment after going to India for H1b stamp. I am coming back on Nov 11th and not sure I get the appointment before that.
