You might want to start by looking at United State Customs and Border Protection (US CBP). The FAQ will answer most of your questions.

You probably won't be allowed to enter the US with FRESH food, like fruits, vegetables, meat, flowers, etc. Packaged foods like chocolates, stuff in cans, etc., should be fine, but I would still declare it, since they ask.
