travel during h-1 approved but status still f-1

My H-1B petition has been approved and I wish to travel out of the country and return before Oct 1 when my status will change from F-1 to H-1. My F-1 visa has already expired and I am on Optional Practical Training. is it safe for me to travel out of the country considering I dont have a valid visa right now (except the H-1 approval)?

It is very safe to travel - to go out of US.
But you must get your H1 visa stamped from US embassy in your home country before entering into US.

If you are not confident about getting the Visa stamped in your home country, then do not travel

My petition for H1 is approved but change of status has been denied assuming that I will have status gap for 3 months. I stayed on my F1 and maintained my status? Now how do I get my status changed? Will it be automatically changed since I mentained my status or do I have to file anything?
