Hello everybody,

I have 2 questions:

1. I got asylum in the U.S. and I am waiting for my green card, (just I applied for I-485 adjustment status). I have valid RTD, so can I travel outside the US without problem? because I have listened that people waiting for GC cannot leave the country until they get the GC.

2. I have valid RTD and valid TOURIST VISA FOR CANADA (in my national passport that is expired). If I am not GC Holder, can I travel to CANADA with my RTD and show my visa in my old passport?

Thanks

sup? An expired document is an expired document, go figure.....
go to your embassy and get your passport renewed. You may be able to extend it instead. Good luck...

I can tell you that Canada does not give visas after the expiration date of your passport. I lived in Canada about 8 years ago studying there for year, I have a lot of relatives there too. One thing I can tell you is this. Canada is very picky in issuing visas on RTD. I tried to get a visa last october to go there and they told me at first (on the interview) that they would have no problem issuing my visa, they told me to have a sit while they print my visa, an hour later, they called my name and they told they changed their minds and decided not to give me a visa. Their reason was because being an asylee in the US, increases our chance of illegaly staying in Canada because there is easier to immigrate. They said that once I have a GC in hands I can enter the country whenever I want but until then they would not allow me to get a visa. Go figure...
And plus my relatives there are all canadian citizens, and almost the rest of my relatives travel constantly to canada...

Thanks, but I get a tourist visa to Canada the last August 2005 and is valid for 4 years until 2009. My question is if I need another passport? because my passport is expired but my not my visa, it still valid.

Hi

I have got Canadian Visa atleast five times during last five years. The only time when I had problem- that was in Canadian embassy in NY. They were reluctant to issue me a visa because of being an asylee in the US, they kept my passport and asked me for a lot of ducuments. What I did--I faxed a written complaint to Consulate General 'Pamela Wallen' mentioning the remarks given by the IO. Result-they issued me Visa, Fedexed it to me on their own expences, inquiry was launched against the IO and I received a written reply of my complaint.

My advice to the BELANDRIA--- Please go to Canadian Consulate, ask them to issue u a visa on ur RTD... or ask them the same question which U posted over here.

Good Luck

yeah the best thing to do is to go to the canadian embassy and show them that you have a valid visa on a expired passport and see if they can transfer it to the RTD

The time I applied for my visa was also in NYC consulate. I guess they are the only consulate in the US not giving visitor visas for asylees.
