Too strange NOT to share

There was a similar case a few years ago where a US born citizen gave up his citizenship to a US consular official and proclaimed himself to be "stateless".

Intelligence has limits - stupidity is boundless.

Very strange indeed, particularly given the fact that 8 U.S.C. 1481(a)(5) provides for a procedure to renounce U.S. citizenship. He could have simply gone to a U.S. consulate in any foreign country and performed the necessary formalities for renouncing U.S. citizenship there.
 
Maybe he wants a free trip to the Netherlands.

But more likely, he's probably trying to get back his Dutch citizenship. There are restrictions on having Dutch citizenship and another citizenship at the same time. He probably lost Dutch citizenship when he naturalized in the US. Now maybe he thinks (correctly or not) that the Dutch government will give him back his Dutch citizenship if his US citizenship is revoked for misrepresentation, since (he thinks) such revocation would be viewed as if he never had US citizenship, much like an annulment of a marriage makes it legally as if the marriage never occurred. Whereas a renunciation would only terminate his US citizenship as of the renunciation date, like a divorce terminates the marriage as of the divorce date, with no retroactive nullifying.
