What is a backdate?

Well, since the INS has been taking very long time to process I-485 applications, they made a decision that asylees should wait four years rather than 5 years to get their citizenship. In other words they backdated our eligibility one year.

I do not see any difference,it has always been 4 yrs after becoming PR`s for asylees to be eligible to file for citizenship.may be you mean`t 3 yrs.could you clarify that pl`s.

The 5th year is credited towards the one year period after you are granted asylum.

It did not know that it has been always like that. I thought that they recently changed it.

always been like that. original purpose was to allow us to become citizens five years after asylum grant like other immigrants.

Hi Gilbert, I am a new member and this forum has really helped me a lot. However I am a bit confused. Is an Assylee eligible for applying for citizenship 4 years after the grant of assylum or 4 years after getting the GC? Thanks in advance for your response.
