TN Visa-Should I renew passport before applying?

Hi, I have a question. I am Canadian, and I may be applying for a TN visa soon. I know TNs can be approved for up to 3 years. My issue is that my passport will be expiring in 2 1/2 years. Should I go renew my passport now so that I can have a 10 year passport before I leave, or does it not matter?

Would they only give me a 2 1/2 year TN visa if my passport will be expiring then? Or would they likely still give me a 3 year TN visa, I could wait a year or so to renew the passport, and transfer the info then? I read in some places that the passport should be valid for 6 months after expected return date.

Thanks a lot for any help

You will get a 3-year TN, but your I-94 -- if you are doing a border petition, will only last the duration of your passport. Wghen you later renew your PP, you simply ask the border for a new I-94 with the correct expiry date, based on your current petition.

Thanks nelson! So you don't think it's worth trying to renew it now to be safe? I didn't know if there could be a slight chance the agent wouldn't give a new I-94? thanks a lot!

That's up to you. How much time do you have left on your TN? Are you planning to go to Canada to renew passport, or wait 3 months for your passport by mail? (I don't want your answers, that is for ypur decision making).

There is no chance that the officer will not give you the missing months when you get your new passport.

IMO don't worry about your passport right now.

2.5 years is a long time, when was the last time you held the same job for more than 2.5 years?

As nelsona said, even if you want to use the full 3 years of your TN status, you can get a new I-94 once you get your new passport. But at that point, since you are likely to be going to the border again, you might want to just apply for a new TN with a new 3-year term.
