Hi,

i got my masters degree in Electrical engineering from Canada and my Bachelors degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from India. i work in Canada as Computer Systems Analyst and currently i am planning to move to USA on TN visa. so my question here is according to NAFTA degree and work should be in the same field but here my education and work experience is different.

so does my application at USA port of entry is going to a be an issue regarding my degree and the role as Computer System Analyst?

There is always a chance that the officer will not view a CSA job matches an engineering degree. You have to find out when you go to the border. You will need to make your case, as many have in the past, both successfully and not.

Hi, I also have Bachelors in Electronics and Communications engineering. And I have my masters degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering in Canada. I have 5 yrs experience in IT as well. I recently got the job offer for Systems Analyst role in US.

I was wondering, if you got TN visa ? If so, under what category? did you get education evaluation done for Masters degree as well? Which POE you went for?

Appreciate your reply in advance .

You guys need to pay attention to the requirements and/or pay for a lawyer to explain them to you.

  • Baccalaureate or Licenciatura Degree in a closely related field, OR
  • Post-secondary diploma plus 3 years of relevant experience. A post-secondary diploma is a credential issued on completion of 2 or more years of post-secondary education by an accredited institution in Canada or the US.
Your masters degrees are not "Baccalaureate or Licenciatura" degrees
Your work experience is irrelevant unless combined with a post-secondary diploma.

The question "is my degree going to be an issue?" is the wrong question. CBP will not find "issue" with you having a degree.

The question you need to answer is "How do I demonstrate that I have a 4-year Baccalaureate or Licenciatura degree in a closely related field". The onus is on you to prove you've met the requirements to be granted status.

It's very easy to prove that a "Bachelor of Computer Science" degree from a Canadian University meets the requirements.
It's a bit more difficult that an engineering degree from india meets the requirements.

...and Cdn/Mex Bach. degree is sufficient. It does not have to be a "four-year" US-style Bach degree, nor does it have to be equivalenced. Only non-CDn/Mex bach degrees need to meet US bachelor degree criteria for a TN. In either case however, as Grant points out they need to be closely related to the TN category you are seeking approval for.

Thank you nelsona and grant for taking time to respond.

Just today, I received TN letter from my employer, saying “Engineer” category and my title as “Software Engineer”, even though I asked for “CSA”.

I did my Bach. Degree in “Electronics Engineering” outside of north america and my Masters degree is in “Electrical and Computer Engineering” in Canada. Will my education satisfy for “Engineer” or “CSA” ?

of course, a lot depended on the job description, but I would think that a CSA request woudl not have worked, since it appears your job tasks and degree matched engineering. Good for you!
