TN status until 2012, passport expires next year

As the title of the thread states, I have TN status until 2012 but my passport expires next year. I was just curious what I would need to do to renew my passport and would it impact my TN at all? Also, what do I actually do with the I-94 that's stapled into my current passport? I read a couple of threads on here that says to keep a copy of it to show people when I leave/come back to the US. Does that mean I can just take it out of my passport?

Also, somewhat unrelated, the US customs officer that I encountered on a trip back from Paris earlier this year told me that because it's a multiple entry TN, I would have to fill out a new I-94 every time I entered the US. Is this correct? If so, why wouldn't they have mentioned it the times I've gone to Canada outside of renewing my TN? I guess I'm just a little confused about this.

You need to keep your I-94, even when you submit your passport to get new one.

I-94s are supposed to be handed in when leaving north america. Keeping a copy is sufficient for re-entry. You fill a new one when coming back.
