TN Status: Mechanical Engineer for a Systems Engineer Position

Hello everyone,

I have a BSc Degree in Mechanical Engineering and I am about to land a job as a Systems Engineer in a medical device company. As you might know, systems engineering is an interdisciplinary and supradisciplinary engineering field. The original position description for education requirements was "Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Optical, ...)".

Is it possible that my application for a TN status will be denied at the border because of the difference between my BSc degree field and the position name / nature?

You are not expected to have several engineering degrees. You are getting a TN in the engineering category. The internal job title is meaningless.

Does it mean that I can obtain a TN status for a job that requires the Electrical Engineering degree (or any others for that matter) if a potential employer is willing to hire me as an Engineer? What about a Software Engineer position?

In a different post you mentioned that a candidate's education and the job will have to match for a proper TN application among other things. I thought that it means if I am a Mechanical Engineer, I can't get a TN status as a Software Engineer, for example. I am not talking about the internal job title, I am talking about the nature of the job responsibilities since they are going to be outlined in the company's letter.

I've seen several posts where people complained that they had been denied TN status due to a discrepancy between their education and their jobs. It's especially obvious for the IT field.

I would appreciate it if you elaborate on this topic. Thank you.
 
You described a job that required multiple engineering skills, not a job opposite to your degree.

In any event, the Accord is silent on which discipline of engineering your degree is vs the job. If the employer wishes to hire a Mech.Eng for EE job, then the border has no grounds to oppose it.

Now. mnay software engineering job are really computer-related, with no engineering required, so CBP will always scrutinize these, from both sides (ie. a non-engineer trying to get an engineering job, and vice versa).
