How soon before your job start date can you enter U.S.?
Is a week early considered to soon?

For some officers, being on your way to report to job is a must. For most however, a week may be fine.

To avoid the problem, arrange a telecon with your new employer that day, as sson as you get TN. Then you can truthfully say that you are going to work that day.

what if the TN letter states the date that I'm supposed to start work? If it's Sept 10, would entering on Sept 1 or 2 pose a problem?

As is usually advised, a start date should not be put on the letter, for the very reason we are discussing.

With a firm start date written, almost all POES will say to come back on the 7-9th.
