TN and TD different duration issued

Hello,
We are all Cnd citizens.
My husband entered on TN status through Vancouver and was issued it for 3 years. Was a staight forward process for him there.
I entered with a child in NY from visits in Europe. Customs officer was not familiar at all (he told me) with TN/TD and went to check with his manager. Came back (being an expert now) and issued us one year status (I-94). I indicated that my husband has a 3 year status, but he said that it must have been a mistake and there is no such thing  (mind you he had a copy of my husband's I-94 in front of him.)
Well, I didn't want to argue with him and I was tired and my baby was a bit distressed after long flight.

Is there a way I can correct this now? And does TD status need to match TN or sometimes officers give different durations. Although I do know that we received our TD 1 year status due to the lack of knowledge of customs officer.

Thank you very much in advance.

30 days or so before your TD I-94s expire, just file an I-539 requesting another 2 years.

Or, save yourself $300 and simply get a new I-94 for the TD when you next cross the border -- if it is before your TD expires.

It does illustrate that non-Cdn POEs are regularly ignorant of TN/TD issues.
