Temporary posting abroad while on H1 visa?

Hi everybody,
My company wants me to work on a project in the UK for around 1 year. I will continue to be on the payroll at the main office where I work presently. I will be traveling back and forth between the UK and the US during the period of the project.

Is it okay for me to work on this project, and retain legal H1 status? How long can I be out of the US for any given period of time?

Are there any issues regarding maintaining a residence in the US? That is, do I still need to retain my apartment while I am in the UK?

Are there any other issues surrounding such temporary postings?

Yes it is okay. Make sure you pay US taxes and file tax returns. You dont need to retain an apartment, but can have a friend's or office address as communication address ...
