Eight percent of all babies born in the U.S. in 2008 belonged to illegal immigrant parents, according to a groundbreaking analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data by the Pew Hispanic Center. Under the 14th amendment to the Constitution, each child obtained U.S. citizenship at birth while one or both of the parents remained undocumented.

Checking claims that people come to U.S. so their babies will be citizens. The study sheds new light on a group of Americans at the center of a hot political debate in recent weeks. Some Republican lawmakers have proposed revising birthright citizenship to bar U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants from obtaining legal status.

Pew estimates 340,000 of the 4.3 million newborns in U.S. hospitals in 2008 belonged to illegal immigrant parents. In total, 4 million U.S.-born, citizen children of illegal immigrants currently live in the country, according to the study

The study is the most comprehensive, non-partisan research to date on children of illegal immigrants living in the U.S. and adds important context, and frames the ongoing debate. Previously there have been few reliable estimates of annual U.S. births to illegal immigrants.

Critics of birthright citizenship have expressed concern over the burgeoning size of America's illegal immigrant population, estimated at 10.8 million and whose offspring in the U.S. would be able to sponsor their parents and relatives for legal residency. The children are sometimes referred to as anchor babies.

"Birthright citizenship I think is a mistake," said Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina. "We should change our Constitution and say if you come here illegally and you have a child, that child's automatically not a citizen."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell and other leading Republicans, including Arizona senators Jon Kyl and John McCain, have indicated an openness to exploring the 14th Amendment issue raised by Sen. Graham. But some harbor deep reservations about changing the Constitution.

"It's a rather unseemly business and I think we ought to have some hearings about it," McConnell said of the practice of illegal immigrant mothers giving birth in the U.S.

"Congressional hearings are always warranted when members of Congress raise the issue of amending our Constitution," said McCain in a statement. "I believe that the Constitution is a strong, complete and carefully crafted document that has successfully governed our nation for centuries and any proposal to amend the Constitution should receive extensive and thoughtful consideration."

I have to wonder how they calculate or estimate those numbers, given that parents generally don't report their citizenship status when registering a birth.

Estimates likely based on birth rate for each ethic group/country of origin. For example, if they estimate 45% of illegals are from Mexico and that the birth rate of all Mexicans in US is 4.5%, they deduce that 4.5% of the 45% were born to illegal parents.

In fact it is easy. Birth certificate usually write down parents SSB numbers. If they are left balnk, most likely they are undocumented aliens

Anyway, this is bound to be in the news for a while. I think it is mostly political posturing, but one must remain vigilant.

Should'nt we be glad that there are children actually being born here? Many western countries are undergoing an negative birthrate and their populations are aging faster than can be replaced.

How credible is the author of this report?

How incredible that is that you have never heard of PEW? You might want to visit their website, download previous surveys on many issues, pretty impressive statisticians who look at the numbers and report only facts or what is being projected.

The problems is that the kids being born are brown, not white. I actually read a case in which a GOP member of Congress indicated that he will have no problem if those kids been born, their parents where from Western European or Nordic countries. The issue is these brown kids don't assimilate into the Anglo Saxon culture. This sound like the argument used by Hitler against my forefathers. Unfortunately, people like Jeff Sessions read into the Constitution what is in their own political interest, because this country is based on influencing public opinion. Anyone who doesn't see race wars in this latest issue isn't looking hard enough.

Thank you for your suggestions. My issue with such a sensational headline is that it doesn't matter who did the study but rather how the study was done. There are many 'well respected' scientists and journalists whose reports were later discredited due to outright falsification of data or poor research methods. Don't you find the the timing of this report rather suspicious? How long was the study? What is the research sample? Was is randomized or did they concentrate in the southwestern states? These are questions I hope to answer before taking the headline at it's face value.

Read the report rather than jumping to conclusions:

Sure sounded like you questioned the report before looking at it in detail first.
