Stolen Greencard and the Short Term Future

Howdy All,

New to the forums, but have been skimming them for quite some time. LPR from Canada, living in the United States for 8 years. Recently, all my documents and ID (greencard, passport, birth certificate, SS card, and many others) were stolen. I E-Filed for my replacement greencard two weeks ago, however, I am looking to change fire departments before it arrives.

My question is, during the processing time for my replacement greencard, what type of evidence can I acquire to prove that I am a LPR, keeping in mind that my passport is also in the process of being replaced? I need to call USCIS tomorrow, but just wanted to hear some opinions as well. If this has happened to anyone else, or if you have any ideas, I thank you in advance for your comments.

Thanks,

Ryan

A copy of the police report would be one.

File a report with your local police or the police in the community where the theft took place. Then, get a copy of the police report or at the very least, the number of the report. It will help you later in proving the theft to USCIS and that indeed all your important documents/IDs were stolen. If the police are reluctant to take your report, ask to file a "Miscellaneous Incidents" report, or try another jurisdiction, like your state police.

Good luck and hope all goes well!! :)

be sure to call the social security center to let them know so they can put a credit fraud warning in your SSN# incase someone used your personal identification.

don't carry your SSN# with you isn't safe.

Don't call SSA; they don't handle fraud alerts on your credit report.

Contact Equifax, TransUnion and Experian.
