status update with SS administration

Hi,
I have a question about social security administration after getting certificate of citizenship, how crucial is the update of your status with ss administration for fast processing of the passport application. I heard that some people never update it but still got passport fairly quickly.
Anybody else has experience on this?

Thank you

how about a name change, should I apply for passport first or get a new SS card with my new name on it first? Does SSA need your US passport as a form of identity to process the case?

Does not matter.

With the name change, I am not sure. I went to SSA with my naturalisation certificate + name change court order.

Did they approve your application? If they did, I think you have answered my question buddy. Thanks. :)

They approve the application only after verifying with the document-issuing agency. In my case, they contacted USCIS since I submitted naturalisation certificate. Had I submitted passport, they would probably contact Department of State instead.

I applied for my passport at the Naturalization Ceremony itself. With Expedited service, I had my passport in hand in 10 days. It was probably a few weeks after that, that I made changes to my SSA status. So I dont think the SSA status affects your passport.

I don't think I will be able to apply for passport at the ceremony.
The reason people recommended to update SSA first before apply for passport is SSA only needs a photocopy of your naturalization certificate, where the passport agency/post office needs the original copy of your certificate to process the application.

Hmm.. Photocopy are you sure ? I showed them the original. I dont see how they would update anything without an original government issued document. Could be wrong though.

So today I had my citizenship ceremony at the district court. :D I am a US Citizen now!!

The SSA ppl came in and gave us partially filled out SS forms to fill out to update our status with the SSA after we checked in with the CIS ppl and surrendered our I-551 cards, before the ceremony started. They were extremely nice to tour around the small court room (there were 67 of us) to answer everyone's questions and they told us to come to their little booth set up outside the courtroom after we got our naturalization certificates to turn in the forms to them and they would complete the forms by examining our certificates and name changed docs (if you have a name change) right there at the spot without making photocopy or taking the original copy from us.
What a nice surprise! I was really grateful of how efficient the SSA is in handling these cases and they definitely saved me a trip to the local SSA office.
BUT they told us that if you have a BIRTH DAY change on your SS card, you will have to do that at their office instead of the ceremony site.

Hopefully this info will be helpful to some of you, but I don't know if this has now become the standard procedure throughout our great nation. So please take this piece of info with caution.

It would work in smaller oath ceremonies like yours, but when there are 10 times more applicants, it will become a burden on SSA. I went to the local SSA office right after my oath ceremony, and mind you, there were only 43 new citizens, but still there were long lines because the majority of these new citizens headed straight to the same office too. I did not have much choice because at that time I lived 130 km from my local district USCIS office, but had I lived much closer, I would have definitely waited a day or two.

well, to be fair, the SSA ppl did remind us the line in their branch office would be long, therefore it's more convenient to have everything done before we left the building.

so did they need make a photocopy of your certificate to process your application at the office?

Updating your citizenship status to SSA will allow us to renew the driver's license online. I didn't update my Permanent Resident status to SSA after getting the GC. So when I tried to renew my driver's license online, it didn't allow me to do so. I had to physically go to the Driver's license office to show my GC and got my renewed driver's license after 1 week. But once when I got my Citizenship, I updated my status to SSA and when I try to do the Change of Address for my DL online, it went through smoothly and got the new DL in mail. Just my experience.
