My (primary app) and my wife's GC were approved recently - I have a couple of questions

1. Do I need to get my SSN card changed - it currently says "valid for work only - with INS authorization."

2. For Wife, do I need to apply for SSN at the Local SSN office?

thank you.

Yes you have to...

Post GC with the Stamp in hand you have to go to your closest SS office and apply for a new one. The new one comes with the same number but with the "WORK WITH INS AUTORIZATION" removed from it.

The process may take from 6-8 weeks. They will take your old card away and give you a letter stating you have applied for SSN.

Good luck!

You do not have to replace the SS card. Its your choice but the removal of conditions will certainly help you in the future. However, every new immigrant MUST apply for fresh SS card.

The appl is the same for fresh & existing SS cards.

Its preferable to wait till the plastic comes as some Soc Sec offices are not updated quickly of your change in legal status.

Soc Sec Office did NOT ask us to surrender the existing SS cards. New cards came in 10 days.

1. Yes. Change it. It does not matter but better be with new card which does not have any restrictions. Go after 1 - 2 weeks after your stamping.

2.Yes. You can apply for SSN for your wife at local SSN office.

Social Security Calculations

Some one told me, you should get SSN condition removed and get the records updated as the way Social Security Benifits are calculated are different after GC...Never could find any information on that but better be safe....
