SSN and GC wait times

Hi!

First of all thanks to everybody for their help during this long and stressful process! I probably wouldn't be here in the USA today without your help!

I have some questions though.

1. I came to the US to activate my GC on 10th September and following the instructions from the US embassy at my home country I did not apply for SSN because I ve already done that through my DV application. 2 weeks later I went to the local SSA office and asked about my case but they didn't know anything so they asked me to fill a new form for SSN. I will be leaving in 2 weeks and they told me it might take up to 4 weeks until my card arrives! I have someone at the address I gave but wouldn't be better to have the ssn before I leave?

2. They have sent me 3 welcome letters already but no actual GC yet! I signed in USCIS and my case is on the step where a notice is sent to me that my visa is approved. How long does it take until I get my actual GC?

Thanks in advance!

It's matter of time, just wait little

Sure soon you will receive your GC just wait for couple of days, but to get your SSN, remember 21 days from the entry date printed on your passport has to go, then go to the nearst social security office with your passport and GC, apply by filling the form, and within 10 working days maximum you will find it in your mail box .......................................

That's a bad advice. Everybody should go the the nearest SSA office a few days after arriving in the US to make sure to get the SSN card asap!

GC can take some time, depends on the visa center. But you already got the welcome letter(s), so you are on a good way :)

It doesn't matter if you go back to your country without your SSN, you only need to know the number if you want to apply for certain things. If you find a job you will need to show it in person when you show up for your job, but if you are planning on going back, you don't need it and can have it send by certified mail or email a copy so you have the number......mostly you never show your card, but you have to give your number here to almost everybody...be carefull a lot of ID theft takes place that way.

How do you sign up online to view case status after CP and after POE?
Do you have to wait for the welcome letter to get your 'case receipt number'?
