Hello all,

My elderly father (65 years old) has been granted political asylum in the US. We are interested in SSI benefits for him. As far as I know, he is eligible for some retirement payments due to his age. Does anyone know anything about this topic? What kind of payments, for how long, etc.?

He is also receiving Medicaid, food stamps, and cash. We don't know what is covered by Medicaid? Can my father have surgeries or hip/knee replacements with Medicaid or any oral surgery like implants?

Cannot find this info on Internet.

Thank you.

I don't know about SSI. As far as Medicaid is concerned, all medical treatment and procedures are covered as long as it is required by doctors to maintain good health.

SSI is for disabled people, if he is disabled then he may qualify.
He does not qualify for Social Security/Retirement benefits due to his age as he never worked the required quarters of work to qualify.
He will receive Welfare, Medicaid and only absolutely necessary medical needs will be covered, any cosmetic precedure is not covered under Medicaid.

namecheckvictim is right, you have to pay into it to recieve benefits, and it's federal where as medicaid is state. His medical coveverage will depending on the state you/he lives in and depending on the medical facility he visits. It also depends on what needs done.Keep in mind, some offices don't accept medicaid.

OK guys, here is good news:
My father, an elderly asylee, is eligible for Social Security Benefits, Medicaid, Cash, Foodstamps.

It is Supplemental Security Income, not social security. To get social security you must have worked for ten years.

Just a friendly reminder, a person with asylum status can under current law get SSI only for seven years. After seven years the person will need to become a citizen.

Thank you for the clarification. May you please answer: do my father lose SSI once he gets a green card?

Another question, some official documents say that asylees wait up to 10 years in a queue to get their green cards, however, some asylees get green cards right away. Why is that? My father is hesitant whether to apply for a green card or not. Any opinion?

No he does not lose SSI when he gets his green card. The seven year clock will keep running. Once he hits the seventh anniversary he will lose the benefit unless he is already a citizen or Congress changes the law.

Before 2005 there was a long wait for an asylum based green card. But the law has been changed so you guys can get your green cards quickly.
