Hi Guys,

My father sponsored me when i was 16. when i reached 22 years he got his citizenship and uplift my papers. at 23 years i came to the US. its been 3 and a half years since im in the US.

can i apply for citizenship now rather than waiting for 5 years? someone told me since my father was a citizen when i came to the US i can apply for citizenship in 3 years. is this true?

Not true. The 3 year rule is only for people married to US citizens. It is not clear from your comment when you got your Green Card. I don't quite understand what was your process to obtain a green card, although I don't need to know to answer your question. You'll need to wait until 5 years minus 90 days (85 to be on the safe side) since you got your green card before you can apply.

i understand that, the OP had been sponsored by his parent who is a USC. but unfortunately its only the spouse of the USC is eligible to apply for naturalization upon completing 3 years of gc. For the OP, he is a LPR so he has to wait for 5 years as a LPR. The OP can apply 90 days in advance of his 5th anniversary of being an LPR as long as he meets the continuous residency and physical presence requirements

I assume that you are NOT married to your father now..lol!!! Only spouse of USC can apply based on 3 years, provided they have been a GC holder for 3years, married to the same spouse for 3 years. Let us NOT marry out parents for citizenship...plz...lol!!!!

That would be considered incest under the U.S. laws, and most certainly demonstrate poor moral character and probably a deportable crime. :)
