Sponsor a friend to the US (Green Card)

Hello,

This might sound like a weird question, but I have several Russian, Ukranian, and Moldavian friends who came to the US through a sponsor who is not related to them, who they didn't even know in person prior to coming here. From what I understand, that sponsor simply promises that he/she will finance the immigrating family for the first year in the US, and they can get a green card and come here.

If anyone knows something about that or how I could do it for my friend from Germany, PLEASE tell me! I really need to know.

THanks a lot!

you have been duped. The people probably had an independent way of getting a GC (through a lottery, for example), and simply needed an affidavit of support, which was provided by the person not related to them.

Or they got a tourist visa (and affidavit of support), and simply stayed here when their status expired.

It is quite possible, if your friend has business and the business sponsers you through work visa (H1B). But you must be a university graduate to qualify for this category.

There are 2 steps. Once is applying for an immigrant visa (I-130: petition for alien relative) and then showing that the potential immigrant would not become a burden (I-864 affidavit of support). For the I-130 there are several categories (spouses, unmarried children etc etc) and for the sponsorship it could be the main sponsor + people who are not even related (I-864A)

For example, my sister was sponsored by her husband for the I-130 and we got an "uncle" to help out with the affidavit.

However you do have to be related to start the process.
