Social Security Number

Can we apply wifes social security number with Passport stamping or do we need to wait for Plastic card ??

Either will OK. But SSA will check online with USCIS. If USCIS
is slow to update some record, SSA will delay the issurance.

So give it some time if your wife already has a SSN card
and you only want to get her a replacement because some
SSA office may take in the old SSN card that
will leave applicant a long time without a SSN card.

If this is the first time your wife apply for a SSN,
then go head. Who cares about delay.

They certainly don't do this in Atlanta, nor should they anywhere else. Get the conditions removed.

They simply grabbed our (old)cards and pushed them in their draw even with out a word to us.(resulting in card-- vaccum).

When I went to SSA to update my change of status, they took our SSN card. The new cards took 2 weeks to come in mail, not too bad.

This is the first time my wife is getting SSN.She was on dependent visa before.

So better wait till she gets her physical card than applying now right ??

Yes, they do, as lots of people have reported here. I would just not even take the old card with me.
That's what I have heard too. I did the same thing. I never took my SSN card.

No need to wait for physical card. Your wife can get SSN with passport stamp.

The risk when doing that is: if the lady at SSA office
says :"go home and bring yoru old card". Then your
current trip will be wasted.

SS-5 says one category of application is to get
a duplicate card, so that means one can have
more than one cards but all cards should be
exactly same. new PRs are to get a new card
so you can not use duplicate card category
as an excuse for not bringing your old card

If your current SSN card has "not valid for work","Work
with DHS or INS permit only " and you don't like
it, then you need to go to SSA to get a new SSN card
with the same SSN as before

when I got a new card here in Atlanta due to a name change (marriage), they never took my old card. So, now I have two. :)

And one can always claim that one lost it ...

Are you sure you wanna do it? This is a govt issued document. What if you are told to file a police report for the "loss"? Will you lie to police as well?

Hey Guys,

Got Passport stamping done on 6th and same day went to SS office in same building for removing restriction.

To my pleasant shock the new SS cards came in today's mail. This must be a record of some sort !!!

It's the matter of common sense. One has to judge the scenario and act on it. When was the last time somebody lost the SSN card or the DL where a police report was required in US?
