Social Security money for Asylees

I have heard that Asylees are entitled to some financial assistance as refugees are. What is the procedure for applying for social security money as an Asylee? Will it have any effects on I-485 application?

Well, the Federal Government runs a special cash program and a special medical insurance program for refugees and asylees. It is very limited and can only be accessed within the first 8 months of the asylum grant.

Refugees/Asylees can receive benefits from most regular welfare programs (like SSI or Food Stamp) if they meet the requirements specific to those programs. Most other immigrants are not eligible to participate as a result of the 1996 welfare law.

States may also have assistance programs that cover the asylee population.

Receiving those aid DOES NOT impact your I-485 if you apply as an asylee.

But it could become a problem if you become impatient with the long wait for a refugee visa number and decide to apply via employment or family relations.

Cash Assistance

Hi

I know that now granted asylees can apply for cash assistance program. So can anyone tell me how to apply, what are requirements (income..??), documents etc.

Is there any time limitiation to apply for it? What I mean is that when is the last time after asylum grant.

Another question is if 8 month period (assistance) counts from the applcation for cash assistance or from the date of asylum grant.

Where can I get detail information about that?

Thanks
