The. Walker,

Ur A number is printed on ur I-730 appoval notice. See on right top of the letter, under beneficiary column. It should have a nine digit numbers followed by letter A. That is ur A number.
My son had same approval notice which u got. He got un restricted SS card with in 10 days. The office u visited may have not the experience to deal with such situation. Instead of waisting time in same office and arguing, please find another office close to u and try it there. U said ur I-94 has no number that is no problem. I-94 do not have number. Do not worry about that. ok

Appreciate your post Chang. I just checked my A# on my EAD card and the one on I-797 A ( right above my name ). The two are different indeed. I believe the lady at the SS Office entered it ( not sure though ).Wonder why it didn't work.

Also thanks to clarifying the I-94# issue. I thought that my I-94 number was missing so I kept calling USCIS several times!

Any EAD card has an alien number right? :S That number is different than the one on the I-797 A ( right above my name ).

Like I already mentioned, the lady at USCIS told me that A numbers get upgraded as status change.

Why don't you march you butt down to CIS and get a EAD card, then get your SS card.
You are not entitled to a unrestricted card, any employer that will hire you isn't going to give a damn about your I-94.

No.. They don't, you get only 1 A-number and that is it.

The.Walker,

Each Alien is supposed to have only one Alien Number, no matter how many cases they have in the immigration system.

USCIS made a mistake or they think you are two aliens.

I'm actually getting confused.

There's a number right on top of my name in the I-797A that says A 0** *** ***

Is that an A#?

If that's an A number then it is different than the A# on my EAD card that was issued based on Economic Hardship ( F-1 ).

I applied for a new EAD card on Thursday ( albeit my other EAD Card doesn't expire until the end of August ).

I never said that I'm entitled to an unrestricted social security card. Technically, asylees don't need an EAD card but USCIS still insists that we applied for an EAD card to avoid useless hassles with prospective employers. I was going to apply for an EAD card in later months while I wanted to ensure that I had an unrestricted SS card first.

And fyi, the nearest Local office is 3 and a half hrs drive away. I don't intend on paying a visit until the day when I'd be required to go and have my biometrics taken.

Walker,

Let me try to clear ur confusion. The A# u got on ur EAD based on F-1 status must starts with fig 1. That is temporary A#.
Whereas A # on ur approved I-730 starts with fig 0. This is ur actual and valid A#.It is permanent one.

If SS people could not found ur record in USCIS data, the only reason is that they had not updated it on that date. If u visit them and ask them to check it again I am positive it must have been done by now. It does take time for updating USCIS data. OK

Thanks for the clarification Chang.

Also, you said that I-94 shouldn't have a number right?

RIGHT.
Moreover, u are entitled for unrestricted SS Card. They have to give u one. They will get back if u have the restricted one already. However, the SS# remains the same u have already

I went to change my ss card today.
No questions asked. Showed them the judge's decision and the I-94 with asylum granted status = you will have your unrestricted ss card in two weeks :D
(but they kept my old one)

Good for you man. Unfortunately, I'm living in a state full of ignorants. First, it was the woman at the SS office who actually asked me why I needed an unrestricted SS card in the first place, then she told me that I couldn't get one until I naturalized.

Just this week, I went to talk to an immigration officer and even she told me that non-US citizens donot get unrestricted Social Security card. I just didn't know how to react to it. I'm waiting for my EAD card now. Hopefully that will help me solve the problem.

When I went to get mi I-94 I asked the immigration officer (in my case the supervisor) about an unrestricted SS and she told me same BS. After arguing with her for awhile I gave up on trying to explain the law and left.

With I-94 in hand and this ---> http://www.ssa.gov/immigration/documents.htm I went to SS administration office. The girl behind the window was in training and after consulting with a supervisor she processed my application. She also explained to me that their system is not updated yet with the judge’s decision on my case but she will either call the court for an update or she will request it by mail/fax. In any case, after a month I got my brand new unrestricted SS card.

Bottom line is that you have to be more persistent in your deeds. If you cannot do it yourself call your attorney and he/she will help you

We ( my father and I ) don't have an attorney but except for some complicated matters, I believe there are many "rights" that can be enjoyed with a little effort. I'm gonna give this woman at the SS office an earful when I go to apply for SS card after receiving my new EAD card.

I didnt even show my new EAD card (aka the white card)
I printed out the info about the unrestricted ss card (just in case) but I didnt need it after all.
I waited almost three months before changing my ss card.

Apparently, my I-797 A ( notice of approval ) didn't have an I 94 number and they didn't have a clue on what they were supposed to do. They applied for a SS card though and within a week, I recent a restricted SS Card that I already possessed.

When I went there, they told me to come back with an EAD card that will have a different A number. Funny thing is, when they applied for my SS Card, they couldn't do anything with the A number on the notice of approval ( its the one that should've been entered ). They didn't know anything about my filing category and like I've already mentioned, they told me that a non-US citizen can't have an unrestricted social security card. The lady at the office was embarrassed when I showed her a printed copy from a SS website.
