Social security and Medicare taxes on OPT

Currently I am working on my OPT and my employer has filed for my H1B visa. The H1B visa application is still in process which means that I am still on F1 visa. In my first paycheck my employer has deducted social security and medicare taxes. My question is, since I am on F1 visa, do I have to pay social security and medicare taxes? As far as I know, I start paying social security and medicare taxes only when my status gets changed to H1B. Am I right?

Please comment.

You are OPT with work authorization, so you have to pay all the taxes. It is some thing like one year temp H1 but not employer specific.

Social security and medcare taxes are exempt while in OPT, you can ask your employer to stop deducting those or can file a claim at the end of the fin yr, they will refund it to you.

i had the same issue in 2003.i filed my returns to IRS to get back my social and medicare(7.65%) and i've got back my money. Its simple and straight forward.need to fill out some forms and send to irs but you got to be patient as it takes 90-120 days.

if u need more info about how to do it,please reply to my e-mail and i shall send u the links.

well, I'd rather pay them since if you are planning to immigrate at some point, you will only get SS if you worked for 40 quarters and your SS income will be based on the average of the SS taxes that you brought in.
