Silent Protest...

How about we do a silent protest in front of the CSC office. This would get medias attention and hopefully theirs....

I say we do a silent fart on their nose.

As usual nothing will have any effect, but this would atleast trouble them a bit.

I agree!!

we could do a silent demo at the INS office in San Jose...I feel it will surely be covered by Kron 4 or whatever atleast 2 seconds of air time...

and we should do it more than once...1 hr every 15 days - say - surely there will be some effect if say 500 chaps collect there...

I am all for it...

I will surely attend

Guys, please fix a time ASAP and I will surely be there along with my two year old.

I will go too.

In America, you have to make some noise if you want to be treated fairly, that's the experience I got from the last three years.

BTW, does anybody know exactly what happened to the MAG 7 IIOs? had they been assigned, or nobody has been assigned?

All right guys..looks like a lot of you agree to this.
How about we make a sign up sheet online - could someone take a lead with this. If we have a 100 or more people, we'll surely get media there - KRON, KTVU etc.
How about June 1st week - Thursday/Friday morning??
Please let me know what day would you prefer?

I am in Northern California, and will not be joining.

However, apart from a sign up sheet, please do have a local meeting in advance so that everyone understands what can / cannot be done.

Just as making too much noise can get you arrested, silent protests with signs that were held up on WOODEN sticks of perfectly innocent dimensions can also get you, while plastic or metal will not! See, and be familiar with: http://www.lawcollective.org/PDF/Legal Observer Handbook/Laws.pdf

The important thing is to know and understand the law, so one can stay on the right side of it.

Here is the complete resource: http://www.lawcollective.org/handbooks/activist/html/intro.htm

This protest would mean more, if it got more coverage. I am thinking of asking Rajiv, and if all of us ask our AILA lawyer members to arrange some media clout, this protest would mean so much more.

Lets put our heads together on this, come up with a core solution, and follow it as per the advice of someone sensible like Rajiv.

Once we have a formulated plan, with the blessings of someone powerful, then we can decide on a day and plan it right.

Any ideas?

I think its time that we raise our voice. Today on Lou Dobbs Money Line, their was a feature on H1Bs. They were whining about how H1 B from *India* workers are taking American jobs.

Anyone else seen such other programs, besides Lou Dobbs?

Too many such programs, and we have another headache coming up. Public opinion/politics mean a lot around here.

I believe all this is non sense about H1B taking away the jobs from American is being generated by CNN and other channels because in the next couple of quarter the limit of 195K H1B will expire. The limit will automatically come back to 65K H1Bs.

I think this is a good idea. We should make sure that we are not breaking any law by doing this(just being cautious). Count me in, if its going to be at laguna csc. I will try to convince my friends too.

I've asked Rajiv about the legality of our protest, and whatever precautions we need to take .. plus .. whatever extra we can do, to have more effect on the full process.

The protest is perfectly legal.

The trick is to know all the loopholes that can be used to trip one up, and avoid them.

As I had once suggested as part of a diffrent post, one can even call law enforcement in advance, declare lawful intent, and even negotiate rules of conduct. Law enforcement will never tell you that they will not arrest you... but they will answer direct questions like: "What laws will we be in danger of breaking? What is required to be done to avoid breaking the law?" These questions do not require them to give a legal opinion (like you broke a law or didn't). They are required to give information when requested.

As you can see from the Texas protest (see several posts above; this thread) cops actually were called, and told BCIS that the protest was perfectly legal.

Count me in. One suggestion

It is not easy for the public to realize what the big deal is. So before we go out to the public and media, let's prepare a comprehensive list of points we want to make. What is important is that each of us should stick with these points and not go beyond when talking to media. This is critical if we want our message to be effective. We must agree on the legitimate points to make and stick with these points, not freely improvise on the spot. Here is what I can think of this minute. Everyone, please add to it. Later one of us can compile a final version that everyone should base his/her message on when talking to the public.

* During the employment based green card process, we have to stay in one company and one job title—no promotion, no career advancement. Full potential of a talented human being for a company and for the whole society is often wasted.
* Layoff constitutes an extreme life-changing event for these people. As a result, we work under much more severe stress than other workers.
* Must do whatever it takes to keep the job. Unexposed abuses on these green card waiters easily thrive.
* The wait for the approval of application is not only long but also uninformed—no one knows how long or how short this wait will go on. Planning anything in your life becomes impossible.
* Uncertainties not only include company business, but also include economic environment, outcome of application, future change of government policies. All these add to the extreme stress and restrictiveness of the lives of these foreign workers, these human beings.

In short, a period of such extremely restricted and stressful life going on for a great number of years with no predicted ending time, and with severe uncertainties is inhumane.

gaidahan,

Suggestion:

Make 2 lists.

One of short messages that you will fit on a sign and which are complete in their meaning. You will need large (8" - 10") high letters to make sure TV can get it without having to close up too much. White background is NOT good for TV. Light beige, blue, tan, grey etc., are better. Also need good contrast between back and foregrounds

The second, a one-page list of suffering and inconveniences, which you can xerox cheaply so that everyone can carry one and handover to the media, if media happen to talk to that particular person.

I am in Northern California; hence the backseat driving...sorry!

Number of people at the protest is very important. You don't want a very meagre crowd.
If we want more people to join, we should send out email flyers or paper flyers @ Indian stores.
