I have GC dated since april 2008 and got it through asylum ofcourse. I also have a RP expiring next month june 2012. I am eligible to file for CITIZENSHIP next year. I intend to go for travel to india this coming winter season. I first wanted to reapply for RP which cost much more than RTD as RP is considered superior compared to RTD in my opinion and I like it much better but RP costs almost twice as much than the RTD and I am applying and probably receiving the citizenship next year anyway.
If within next 2 yrs, i am not doing international travel more than once and that too only for a month, isn't it better to just go for the RTD instead?

Do you have a valid passport? which country? I am not sure if India accepts a RTD instead of a passport.

You're not an asylee from India, are you? If you are, going there might be tricky without an Indian passport.

You can freely get an RTD. In a sense, it is superior to the RP, actually, because you can go to more countries visa-free with an RTD than with an RP.

If you're not an asylee from India, you can probably apply for a visa on your RTD. If you have enough supporting documents, you'll most likely be issued a visa.

If you're an asylee from India, I don't know how it will go down. My advice, in this case, would be to wait until you get citizenship.

Get the cheaper RTD. Nothing is stopping you.

Doesn't India hold a grudge against people who fled and claimed asylum by saying they were persecuted in India?

Doesn't every country hold a grudge in such a situation?

Anyway, I doubt the OP is an asylee from India hoping to go there on an RTD.
