Seriously Overstayed Visitor Visa

Ok, here's the deal, i am new to this site so i tried to use the search function to the best of my ability but only one or two threads were able to shed some light on the situation i am about to explain.

A friend of mine and his mom came into the US in 1985 on visitor visas(i believe they are B-2) and there was an expiration of 2 years stamped on the actual I-94 card. now i know there is a 3 year ban for overstaying by 180 days and 10 year ban for overstaying by a year. is he going to be banned for life? thank you in advance!

Possibilities:

1. USC marriage based green card
2. Wait for "dream act" that may pass when new government comes in.

how did he get this social security number?... for illegal employment, and illegal presence over 1 year he and his mom have earned a 10 year ban. A bona fide marriage is his only option.

" he is not planning on leaving but he would like to solidify his status here before attempting any such thing."

There is no status to solidify. His status expired when his visa expired. He is currently illegal in the US and subject to deportation should he be found out. As has been suggested by the above posters, a bone fide marriage to a US citizen is the only way he can gain a green card and then citizenship.

i would also like to know if he did marry a US Citizen, would there be any issues with him working the last few years under the SSN that has "not valid for employment" stamped on it? like i stated, he has paid taxes, filed returns, even collected unemployment once for a brief period. would any issues arise once he is married?

This post has 'illegal' written all over it. Your 'friend' (as you put it, though I believe it may be yourself) seems to have been working in the US under a false Social Security Number. If this is the case, you shoud be ready for a very serious consequence. This is neither okay or legal. And to ask if he (you?) can work with a SSN with "not valid for employement" stamped on it makes me see why this problem exists in the first place.
