I wouldn't consider a grant of political asylum to be a valid nonimmigrant status.
A grant of asylum is absolutely NOT a valid non-immigrant status. Asylees are required to register.

how about j-1 overstay with IAP-66 marked D/S? I've been told that technically D/S may not accumulate unlawful entry, and I was lawfully in j-1 from 1994 til 1996, and overstayed from 1997-2000 until I filed my AOS which had an automatic j-1 waiver for being a nacara applicant. I may have been asked at the DMV if I wanted to register for it when I got my DL and maybe I said no, but I did not know then what that was, and back in 1996 they were not that much into people registering for SS. I will be eligible for citizenship in feb 2010 but I will be 36 yrs. of age by then. Will I have to mark yes on the SS question? If I put yes will that be an issue?
