Selective Service Registration

I'm a DV2013 winner and entering the US in a few weeks. I've looked at the selective service website and it seems you need a social security number to apply (which I won't receive for a few weeks after entering the US). Are there any other male DV winners aged 18-25 who have been through selective service registration? I'm assuming I just wait until I have my social security number then apply but can't seem to find an answer anywhere.

I`ve got same question ando also If you dont apply for selective service what would happen?

Tbh the idea of my son getting sent to fight a war for America.. somewhere in N.Korea or Iran.. makes me cringe.

The Perks of being an American haha. But in all honesty, US does have the largest military in the world so chances your son will be sent somewhere else are slim, unless he volunteers.

Plus all the benefits USA will give me and my family, the least I can do is offer myself to defend it in time of war. It'd be an honor

No ways out of it. If you look at the Welcome Guide for New Immigrants, if you are between 18-25 you MUST apply for selective service.

The only way someone can get sent to war is if there is a draft (like there was for Vietnam) so don't worry about it.

At the moment America is sorting out its budget deficit so war is unlikely unless Lil Kim in North Korea or the Iranians start talking rubbish and threatening world peace.

Technically, nothing will happen if you opt to not register for the selective service, your GC will not be revoked or cancelled, the govenrment will not come after you. However if you're planning on applying for the US citizenship somewhere down the road, the decision to not register for selective service when you should is one that will come to bite you behind the butt. For the citizenship application, you will need to provide your SSR information or show you where no longer qualified to register for the program as at the time you became a LPR

Hi all,

I applied for Selective Service when I got my SSN - however the website struggled to recognize my number. I flicked the SS people an e-mail and this was their response -

We do not know when that may occur, since we only get updates about every 3 months for the online registration system. Your best course of action is to get a registration form from any post office, fill it out and mail it to us. Mail in registrations take anywhere from 2 to 4 weeks and you can view the result of the registration online as soon as it is completed.

I would suggest you fill it out, mail it to us and about 2 weeks later go to the website and check every few days until the registration number is posted for you. You can print that result out and use it as proof of registration until your acknowledgement letter arrives, usually about 30 days after the registration’s effective date.

It is easiest just to print-off and send your own form too as the people at the post office had no idea what I was talking about!
